My son and I are starting a new adventure: Gardening! We had a garden once, long ago when we owned a home in Santa Clarita, CA. I don’t know if it was because of the really hot and dry summers up there, or if I was just plain terrible at it, but that was the first time I tried my hand (or “thumb”) at gardening. FAIL! Every single vegetable plant wilted away under the hot sun and disappeared forever. It was sad. I invested hundreds of dollars in that garden. But it wasn’t so much the wasted money that I was so sad about. It was losing the dream I had of growing my own garden. I had so many fantasies of having a lush and bountiful garden and all the home cook meals I was going to make with the vegetables and herbs that I grew myself. That dream never came true.
Fast forward several years later to today, my son told me he wanted to garden! He said he wanted to grow a garden with a whole variety of vegetables. He wants to help with tending the garden and picking all the fresh foods and have me cook delicious meals with them. Wow! I was inspired once again to attempt to make this dream come true! We got started right away!
We picked out seeds of vegetables and herbs we eat most often in our home: cucumbers, green beans, heirloom tomatoes, lettuce, green onions, eggplant, Thai chili, cilantro, and basil! How’s that for a start? I hope I’m not over-achieving again, only to be disappointed in the end when I find out, yet again, that I don’t have a green thumb. But I really want to make this work out for my little boy.
I purchased a little greenhouse kit to germinate the seeds in. I love how simple this kit is! It’s a tray of little dirt pellets for your seeds to grow into baby plants, then you can move them into their new plant homes. You can get one here: Jiffy Greenhouse Seed Planting Starter Kit
My son made little sticky note tags to label each row so we would remember what seeds were in there.
Here’s an interesting little garden in a bag. It comes with pellets and seeds inside, with a plastic cover so it becomes its own little built-in green house. It’s so awesome! It’s called Seeds of Change Culinary Herb Garden.
Ok, so this is just the first day of our new adventure. I can’t wait until the seeds sprouts and my son gets to see the entire process of growing food with his own eyes! I’m so excited!
If you have gardening tips for me, I welcome all of it! Please leave me a message below! I look forward to hearing from you!
