DIY Face Masks – Easy Sewing

DIY Face Masks, Easy Free Sewing Pattern, Tutorial, Fabric Face Covers, How to Sew Face Mask

We have been sheltering in place now for over two weeks, working from home and homeschooling my son.  Life has been hectic (to say the least!) and there has been little time left in a day for sewing and creating.  But even with all the anxiety that fills my “new normal,” I am thankful to still be employed and my family members are all in good health. 🙏

With the CDC finally recommending face masks or non-medical fabric face covers, I started a little mini mask factory at home this weekend.  I am mainly sewing for my loved ones – just family and friends.  These masks are super simple, basically just sewing together two rectangle pieces of fabric and attaching the elastic for the ear loops.  Happy to share the info here on where to find materials and tutorial used to make these.

Materials Used:

  • Cotton Fabrics – 6″ x 9″ – I used a selection of pretty prints and Kona Solids in white, available at Fat Quarter Shop.
  • 1/4″ Elastic Band (Note that the picture on Amazon shows a neatly wrapped spool but when it arrives in the mail, it is a bundled mess on a piece of scrap cardboard shoved into an envelope 🙉, but don’t worry the elastic is good quality!  Just not packaged well at all.)
  • Sewing Notions:  Scissors, Cutting Mat, Rotary Cutter, Acrylic Ruler, Wonder Clips
  • Face Mask Video Sewing Tutorial by Erica Arndt from Confessions of a Homeschooler – Thank you so much, Erica!  Your video tutorial was so easy to follow!  The only modification I made to Erica’s pattern is that I did not use 3 pieces of fabrics.  I only used two for each mask for breathe-ability and changed the size for my son’s mask.

This little Pikachu one is my son’s.  I modified the pattern to fit him.  He’s 9 so if your child is around the same age, the fabric pieces are 5-1/2″ x 7-1/2″ and the elastic bands are 6-1/2.”

Logan and Grandma in my homemade masks.💕

Hope you are all doing OK!  Cover face, coughs, and sneezes, wash your hands often, and don’t touch your face!  We’ll all get through this together.

Stay well,

Susie 🤗💕

Have you been sewing masks too?

  • Susan - Thank you for the tutorial and the link for the elastic! I just ordered two rolls (black and white) – b/c I trust your review of the quality. LOVE your fabric choices. I just discovered your website and I am smitten with your projects. They are all so cute!
