tic tac toe quilt, hash tag quilt, oh clementine fabric, mini quilts, wall quiltsIt’s the end of 2014… I really wanted to finish one more quilt to add to the collection for 2014 and I did it!  So proud!  Ok, I cheated a little.  Little, as in, it’s a mini quilt.  Sad trombone sound….wah, wah, wahhhh… but it’s still a pretty cute mini quilt.  :)

I had some fabric scraps left over from my Oh Clementine jelly roll, by Cluck Cluck Sew.  I wanted something fast, of course to get it done in time for my last post of the year!  So here it is!  My Tic Tac Toe Mini Quilt!tic tac toe quilt, hash tag quilt, oh clementine fabric, mini quilts, wall quilts

It was my first time straight-line quilting at 1/4″ apart.  Boy, does it test your patience!  I imagined it to be a simple and very fast task to just run it through the machine in a straight line again and again.  But it was tricky tricky!  The more I worried about keeping the lines straight, the wonkier the lines got!  It was still a fun process and I’m happy with the end result, after adding sashing and binding.tic tac toe quilt, hash tag quilt, oh clementine fabric, mini quilts, wall quilts, cats on quilts

Here it is, up on my wall.  I’m inspired to start a mini quilts wall of my own to for my sewing room (slash kitchen corner).  It should be a fun decorating process.  Definitely on the list for 2015!
tic tac toe quilt, hash tag quilt, oh clementine fabric, mini quilts, wall quilts, cats and quiltingI am feeling really good about 2015, guys, and I hope you are just as optimistic and motivated as I am to make it a great year!  This quilting blog is a new venture for me and in the past 3 months that I have been doing this, it’s been such a blast!  I’m getting to know the quilting community and what nice people you all are!  I’m happy to be a part of it and I can’t wait to see all our creations in the new year!

Happy New Year Friends!

Lots and lots of love,

Susie  :)

Finished Quilt Size:  32″ x 36″

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with floral fabrics and my newest quilt is the product of this craze.  This quilt features half square triangles throughout of the lovely “Rosey” fabric by Tanya Whelan.  I didn’t want to go too crazy with the florals so I cut each triangle with white for contrast.  White sashings were then added all around to frame the quilt.  I like how sashings work.  It makes me think of how photographs work.  The white matte helps to frame and enhance the photograph inside, just as the white sashings help to frame and enhance the quilt blocks.  Genius.

We went back to my favorite park for the photo shoot.

Do you know what I love about this photo below?  The red tree behind the quilt.  The one fall tree in all of Los Angeles resides here.  We don’t get to experience autumn leaves like the rest of the country.  But I found this one tree, with its gorgeous red leaves, and I just appreciate it for all its beauty.  The perfect backdrop for a quilt.half square triangle quilts, HST quilts, charm pack quilts, charm squares quilt, tanya whelan quilts, floral quilts, feminine quilts, quilts for girls, mini quilts, baby quilts, quilts with pastel colors, roses and flowers quilts half square triangle quilts, HST quilts, charm pack quilts, charm squares quilt, tanya whelan quilts, floral quilts, feminine quilts, quilts for girls, mini quilts, baby quilts, quilts with pastel colors, roses and flowers quilts half square triangle quilts, HST quilts, charm pack quilts, charm squares quilt, tanya whelan quilts, floral quilts, feminine quilts, quilts for girls, mini quilts, baby quilts, quilts with pastel colors, roses and flowers quilts

For this Rosey Half Square Triangle quilt, I experimented with a different thread for the quilting.  I used a machine embroidery thread because of its glossy factor.  I thought it would add some more interest to the quilt top.  It’s barely noticeable in the photos, just as it is in person.  I think I’ll stick with the basic, and much more economic, cotton thread for quilting.  But I’m glad I did the experiment.  Every day is a learning experience.

  • Suzanne Modesitt - Beautiful quilt! All of your quilts are beautiful though. I was wondering what color you use for the back of your quilts. It looks as though you may use a white on top. Do you have suggestions on brands?
    Thanks!May 29, 2019 – 5:23 pmReplyCancel

    • Susie - Hi Suzanne, thank you for your kind words! For my quilt backings, I usually use low volume white fabrics so that the focus can stay on the quilt top and the backing doesn’t grab too much attention. No particular brand really. Once I finish a quilt top, I take it to Joann Fabrics and search for white backing with small floral prints on it that have similar colors to the quilt top. What project are you working on now?
      Happy Quilting! 😊✨June 21, 2019 – 9:31 amReplyCancel

  • Sandra - Hi Susie,
Love this quilt and I am currently making it for my new granddaughter that will be arriving in a few weeks! Question…I love the vintage quilting and was wondering if you also stitched in the ditch? Or, did you just go around the inside of the triangles?
    Thanks!January 12, 2019 – 8:12 amReplyCancel

    • Susie - Hi Sandra! I stitched in the ditch along all the squares and triangles too, then stitched 1/4″ out from those lines. Congratulations on the new grand-daughter! Happy quilting!January 17, 2019 – 4:56 pmReplyCancel

  • Heather - What size HSTs did you make for this quilt and what size is your borders? How many different fabrics did you use besides white? Beautiful quilt…thanks!

    • Susie - Hi Heather! I used charm squares (5″ by 5″) to make the HST’s and jelly roll strips (2.5″) for the border. There is a variety of fabric prints used in this quilt as I had used a charm pack. Possibly 10-20 different prints. 😊August 15, 2018 – 4:52 pmReplyCancel

Vintage Paris Floral Quilt

Finished Quilt Size:  47″ by 47″

I’ve finally finished the Vintage Paris Floral Quilt!  I truly wish there were more hours in the day so I can spend more time making quilts.  I rarely sew at night, even though night hours could be my most productive hours.  As I’ve mentioned in my very first post, I have a small (but mighty) sewing machine that quakes and shakes the entire table when I quilt!  I want to be considerate of my downstairs neighbors, especially at night.  I already have Logi jumping around up here throughout the day, which bothers them greatly.  They’ve come up here to complain about him several times now… and we’ve only lived here a couple of months!  What lucky folks, to have gotten us as their upstairs neighbor!

Back to my quilt story…

I really wanted this quilt to be vintage-inspired and play up the florals and soft pastel colors, with bursts of red.Vintage Paris Floral Quilt, three sisters quilt, printempts quilt, heirloom quilt, jelly roll quilt, quilt as you go modern quilt, jelly strip quilt, pastel colors quilt, feminine quilt, quilts for girls, baby quilts

I used the remaining jelly strips from my roll to make scrappy binding.  I don’t know if you can tell it’s scrappy.  It’s all pink and it all blends together so nicely that you wouldn’t even know that they were fabric remnants!Vintage Inspired Quilt, Vintage Paris Floral Quilt, three sisters quilt, printempts quilt, heirloom quilt, jelly roll quilt, quilt as you go modern quilt, jelly strip quilt, pastel colors quilt, feminine quilt, quilts for girls, baby quilts

I also discovered a nearby park today, with gorgeously large trees, lush green grass beautifully sprinkled with fallen leaves, and even a bridge with a small stream running under it!  I couldn’t believe something like this can exist in the middle of a dense urban city!  Of course, I ran home and grabbed my quilts for a photo shoot!  Looks like I’ve found my main spot for quilt shoots. Cell Phone Cover Free Tutorial

After going months without a cell phone cover, and two chipped corners on my phone later, I finally sat down and made myself a cover!  It’s a very basic one, more like a cozy pocket for my phone to live in.  Finished with a pretty ribbon and wooden button.  I love it!  Though I might be a bit biased.  If you love it too, I am happy to share the tutorial to make your own and our phones can be cozy and pretty together.

This pattern size is for an iPhone 5c.  I don’t know the specifications for any other model but the pattern is easy to adjust for your phone measurements.

Start with a piece of batting, 3.5″ by 11.”

make your own iphone case

You will need jelly roll strips to sew directly onto the batting (Quilt as You Go method).  If you don’t have jelly roll strips, you can cut your own.  There’s a tutorial for that.  ;-)  How to cut your own Jelly Strips.  Basically, you want strips that are 2.5″ wide and the length will be trimmed down as you are sewing.make your own iphone case

Please your strip onto the batting diagonally and trim down excess parts of the strips.make your own iphone case

Place your next strip directly on top of your first strip, right sides facing each other.  Sew along the bottom of the strip, 1/4″ seam allowance.make your own iphone casePress open and do the same with your next strip.  Repeat until your entire batting is covered with strips.  Then, trim down excess strips on the side.make your own iphone case make your own iphone case

With wrong sides together, fold in half and pin or clip together.  (I prefer clips because I’m afraid of pins.  I’ve been pricked one too many times!  I have pin-prick anxiety.)make your own iphone case

Take your lining fabric and cut the same size, 3.5″ by 11.”make your own iphone case

With wrong sides together, fold in half and also sew along the sides, 1/4″ seam allowance.  HOWEVER, only on one side of the fabric, leave a 3″ inch opening.  You are going to use this opening to “turn out” your phone cover.make your own iphone case make your own iphone case

Place your lining inside your phone cover.  The phone cover must be inside out.  The lining is right side out.  You can use your cell phone to push the lining into the cover so it can nest neatly inside.

Clip or pin the lining and cover together.  Cut a 4″ piece of ribbon and place inside your cover, in between the two layers.  That is, in between the lining and the cover, upside down.  Then pin or clip in place.make your own iphone case make your own iphone case

Stitch 1/4″ from the top all the way around.make your own iphone case make your own iphone case

Now pull the lining out, open the side hole, and invert.  Pull the cover out of the side hole entirely.make your own iphone case make your own iphone case

If you have any questions about any of these steps, leave a comment.  I’m always happy to help!

Send me a photo of what your versions look like!  I want to see your fabric selections and we can “oooh” and “ahhhh” together.

Happy sewing!

Lots of Love,

Susie  :)
